Spot Gallery <\/strong>and Office for Photography\u00a0<\/strong>announce the opening of an exhibition\u00a0Portraits 1959-1985 \u2013 The Consciousness Transformation Project<\/i><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>by Croatian artist Petar Dabac<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0exhibition opening and artist talk\u00a0<\/strong>will be held on Monday, 18 November at 7 pm<\/strong>\u00a0in Spot Gallery (\u010cani\u0107eva 6, Zagreb).<\/p>\n

The exhibition of portraits by Petar Dabac<\/strong> (1942), made between years 1959 and 1985, evokes the eponymous exhibition and project Transforming Consciousness No.1<\/em>, held in 1987 at the cult gallery Arhiv TD<\/strong>. This exhibition displays part of the work of one of our most important photographers and cultural workers \u2013 his iconic portraits spanning nearly thirty years, which over time have outgrown their original function to become an image by which we remember a range of artists and cultural figures.\u00a0However, the present reference to an exhibition that has already taken place\u00a0<\/em>is not only a way to recall the work of the Arhiv TD<\/strong> but also, by following the program designed in 1987, to open a series of (philosophical) questions about the medium itself, as well as the question of the similarities and differences between photography and poetry.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that I used to think less but took a lot of pictures, and today \u2013 the more I think about photography, the less I deal with it, doesn’t give me any worries. On the contrary, I feel that I am finally penetrating the magical camera obscura\u00a0<\/em>from which I expect nothing in particular anymore. Just a plain photography.\u201d (P. Dabac, 1987)<\/p>\n

The opening of the exhibition will be accompanied by the reading of Peter Waterhouse’s poems<\/strong> from the Passim<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>series, interpreted by Adrian Bagari\u0107<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Petar Dabac<\/strong> (Zagreb, 1942) is one of the most important Croatian photographer. His involvement with photography started in 1960 in the atelier of his uncle To\u0161o Dabac. His work, which was created in a period of over half a century, shows him to be a versatile artist with endless curiosity and love for photography.<\/p>\n

He is important as a cultural worker, not only as an artist. After the death of To\u0161o Dabac, he took over his atelier and his vast photographic archive. In 1980 in the part of the atelier he opened a gallery specialized for photography, under the name Arhiv TD. He is one of the funder and pat of the editorial board of the specialised photography magazine SPOT (1972-78). From 1990 till retirement he was teaching photography on the Academy of Fine and Figurative Arts in Ljubljana.<\/p>\n

He has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Croatia and abroad, and was awarded numerous awards for his work.<\/p>\n
