The opening of the exhibition is October 12th and the exhibition space will be open for visitors from 5pm to 9pm.

The exhibition is the product of a collaboration between Office for Photography – Spot Gallery, Gallery AK – The Atelier Koprivnica, in Koprivnica and City Gallery Striegl in Sisak.

The touchstone of this work in progress (2017–2020) is the meadow – the crossroad between the natural space and the urbanised periphery of the city.
The artist has been continuously exploring the meadow in her neighbourhood during her walks and uses it as a metaphor for the relationship between the community (which she herself is part of) and the natural space and landscape.

According to the anthropology of landscapes, people do not merely live within a certain space/landscape, they also live through it: that landscape is an inseparable component of their social and cultural lives. Just as people shape the landscape around them both physically and symbolically, so too does the landscape reciprocate in its influence on the shaping of their identities and interpersonal relationships (Paola Filippucci: “Landscape”, Cambridge Encyclopedia of Anthropology, 2018).
On the meadow cultivated fields and embankments with wild flowers, wild animals and wild landfills merge one into the other. The meadow functions as a microcosm of its own and is used for walks, recreation, agriculture, pasture, hunting, foraging, and so on. It bears witness to the encounters and meetings of the different generations of people who have shaped it just as the meadow has shaped them and their memories. The railroad tracks and the tarmac that leads to the graveyard form a sort of border between the meadow and the city. Soon a new city bypass will be running through that meadow. The steady narrowing and disappearing of the natural space reflects the tendency for the development of cities and social changes.
The artist uses her photographs to record the things she noticed during her walks: objects, both natural and man-made, that have been cast aside as well as natural occurrences and changes. She explores clues and traces, things that get thrown away and burnt, things that once used to mean something.

Maša Bajc, from the Nature of Things series, 2017-2020

As part of the complementary program of the exhibition Office for Photography will be hosting a Zoom reading group on the topic of man and the environment, which will be held on October 22nd.

_

Maša Bajc was born in 1980 in Čakovec, Croatia.
